Search engines have software that "crawls" websites online, they do this so they can index your websites pages & subsequently list those pages (URL's) on their websites (directories) in the appropriate section of their directories (such as Google, Yahoo, Bing etc.)
This process is called "crawling" and you can check in most analytic's dashboards, which sites have visited or "crawled" your websites pages.
If for example, you don't update you site very often, your crawl rate will drop significantly, as the crawler know nothing has been added in a while.
Update your site often, keep the crawlers interested in you web pages!
A fast crawl rate is almost always desirable. That means the bots can index your site more easily and more quickly. And if your site gets more attention from Googlebot, you'll likely earn a higher SERP ranking. In a nutshell, that's why the Crawl Stats data is so important.
