    Meta tags are used to summarize information of a page for search engine crawlers. This information is not directly visibles to humans visiting your website. The most popular are the meta keywords and description tag. These meta tags to be inserted into the area of your page.
    A couple of years ago meta tags were the primary tool for search engine optimization and there was a direct correlation between keywords in the meta tags and your ranking in the search results. However, algorithms have got better and today the importance of metadata is decreasing day by day.

    Meta tags are a great way for webmasters to provide search engines with information about their sites. Meta tags are added to the <head> section of your HTML page.

    Each search engine processes only the meta tags they understand and ignores the rest.

    Google understands the following meta tags:

    <meta name="description" content="A description of the page" />: This tag provides a short description of the page. In some situations this description is used as a part of the snippet shown in the search results.

    <title>The Title of the Page</title>: While technically not a meta tag, this tag is often used together with the "description". The contents of this tag are generally shown as the title in search results

    <meta name="robots" content="..., ..." /> & <meta name="googlebot" content="..., ..." />: These meta tags can control the behavior of search engine crawling and indexing. The robots meta tag applies to all search engines, while the "googlebot" meta tag is specific to Google. The default values are "index, follow" (the same as "all") and do not need to be specified.

    <meta name="google" content="notranslate" />: When Google recognize that the contents of a page are not in the language that the user is likely to want to read, it often provide a link to a translation in the search results. In general, this gives you the chance to provide your unique and compelling content to a much larger group of users.

    <meta name="google-site-verification" content="..." />: You can use this tag on the top-level page of your site to verify ownership for Webmaster Tools.

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="...; charset=..." />: This meta tag defines the page's content type and character set. Make sure that you surround the value of the content attribute with quotes - otherwise the charset attribute may be interpreted incorrectly.

    Google can read both HTML and XHTML-style meta tags, regardless of the code used on the page.

    Hope this information will be useful for all.

    Meta tags is a simple text which is putting into website's source code. We use meta tags to tell search engine what is page about? Every search engine create snapshot on search results through meta tags. It is a important part of on-page.

    I recently just learned how to make meta tags and why they're important. They're great when creating a website and trying to describe the page properly. One advice: always make a different meta tag for each page on the website.

    Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the header on a web page, after the title tag. In the context of search engine optimization, when people refer to meta tags, they are usually referring to the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag.

    I have read at many blogs that Meta Keywords have almost lost their values as far Google is concerned.

    Meta tag is the HTML code which is inserted into the header after the title tag. In the SEO when people are referring Meta tags they are usually referring the Meta keywords and Meta description where all the details are included on the page like who has created and how often it is updated etc.

    Meta tags are embedded within the HTML code of a particular page that give search engines information about what the web page deals with. The information, which people don't see on a page, reveals things like the topic of the web page, the frequency the page is updated, the keywords used ... The most important meta tags to help search engines index web pages and that can help improve a site's rankings are Title tags, Description tags and Keyword tags (though not as important as they once were, they can still be helpful). You can access your page's meta tags by right clicking your mouse, select 'View page source'. They are usually placed at the top of the page's HTML code.

    Meta is one type of HTML tag that is right in the header of a webpage, after the title tag in html page.
    It is more helpful to on- page SEO because search engine spider considers meta tags to check the relevancy of website and keywords you are targeting.

    A special HTML tag that provides information about a Web page. Unlike normal HTML tags, meta tags do not affect how the page is displayed. Instead, they provide information such as who created the page, how often it is updated, what the page is about, and which keywords represent the page's content. Many search engines use this information when building their indices.

    Meta tags are one of main activity done to your every web page. Basically Meta defines for users to create a short summery for your site. Make fresh content for the Meta with included your main keywords which is one of the main parts of Meta. Basically you can consider metas are a direct relation with keywords of your site. So make your meta tags good for getting good visibility in the search engine.

    I appreciate the simple definition of meta tags. Added it on my blogs. I am not sure, however, if they are really working. Are meta tags now irrelevant to our blog's traffic generation?

    Keyword tags are not really used by search engines anymore. Bing and Yahoo sometimes read them but lo longer use them to rank or decide page content. The best tags to create are DESCRIPTION AND CONTENT TAGS.

    <META NAME="Title" CONTENT="Page Title Here"> This should be used on EVERY page with the title of that page in it.

    <META NAME="description" CONTENT="SEO Expert and Web Design Specialist.">

    Another is to use specific tags for search engines, content language, and other useful information.

    <META NAME="Language" CONTENT="english">
    <META Name="msnbot" CONTENT="NOODP">
    <META NAME="Subject" CONTENT="Web Page Subject">

    To keep a page a from being listed by search engines use this <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX,FOLLOW">

    If you want to get really creative and just want very targeted traffic you can limit where your site shows up.

    Distribution tag

    <META NAME="Distribution" CONTENT="Global">

    Global (the entire web)
    Local (reserved for the local IP block of your site)
    IU (Internal Use, not for public distribution)

    I hope this helps.
